It symbolizes the dedication, inspiration, and professionalism not only of its
namesake, Johannes Hofinger, but also of religious educators.

The conference offers support to professionals and volunteers in all areas of ministry.

Fr. Johannes Hofinger, SJ

Johannes Hofinger, SJ was Associate Director of the Office of Religious
Education in New Orleans from 1977 to 1984. Born in St. Johann, Austria, he was a Jesuit priest and a world-renowned missionary, evangelizer, teacher, and catechetical leader.

Among his many accomplishments, Fr. John founded the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila in 1953. He organized and directed numerous infl uential catechetical and church renewal conference on several continents.

He was the author of many books and articles, most notably the popular Our Message Is Christ, Evangelization and Catechesis, You Are My Witness, The ABC’s of Modern Catechetics, and The Art of Teaching Christian Doctrine.

Fr. John received awards from both the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and the Religious Education Assoication (REA). He was also the recipient of the F. Sadlier Dinger Award.

By his own count, Fr. John circled the globe 16 times, evangelizing and educating countless Christians. He nicknamed himself the “catechetical sputnik.” Humbly and patiently, he called for catechists and other ministers to faithfully herald the Good News of Jesus in joy, humility, and hope, even through times of hardship and trial.

The Ministry of Fr. Johannes Hofinger will remain always a “generous gift” to the Lord and to us. His challenge to us to become prayerful, authentic witnesses to a “message of life and for life” remains with us forcefully to this day. The Johannes Hofinger Conference is named in honor of this man who was an inspiration to catechists everywhere
