FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The 33rd Annual Johannes Hofinger Conference will now be known as the

GULF COAST FAITH FORMATION CONFERENCE

The conference, sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans in collaboration with the (Arch)dioceses of  Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, is an important part of catechetical formation of our parish leaders and catechists as well as Catholic School teachers in ministry today. Returning to the original name is more inclusive of the surrounding dioceses in the five states that border the Gulf Coast: Alabama, Florida (panhandle), Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. This year’s conference drew participants from Pensacola, Florida to Brownsville, Texas. We believe the change will help to promote the conference as a broader regional conference with the potential to return to a conference of national status once again.

It is important to honor the past and, at the same time, envision the future. We do not want to forget Johannes Hofinger and his contribution to religious education. For that reason we would like to establish the Johannes Hofinger scholarship fund for those who wish to attend the conference but are unable to afford to do so. It seems appropriate to us that we can best honor Fr. Hofinger by opening doors for others to learn more about ministry and our Catholic faith.

Please plan to join us at the Pontchartrain Center, Kenner, LA., January 8-10, 2015.

Conference details will be posted as they become available on the new conference website:
www.GulfCoastFaithFormationConference.org and on the previous website: www.HofingerConference.org

We look forward to your participation in the 2015 Gulf Coast Faith Formation Conference

Fr. Johannes Hofinger, SJ

Johannes Hofinger, SJ was Associate Director of the Office of Religious
Education in New Orleans from 1977 to 1984. Born in St. Johann, Austria, he was a Jesuit priest and a world-renowned missionary, evangelizer, teacher, and catechetical leader.

Among his many accomplishments, Fr. John founded the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila in 1953. He organized and directed numerous infl uential catechetical and church renewal conference on several continents.

He was the author of many books and articles, most notably the popular Our Message Is Christ, Evangelization and Catechesis, You Are My Witness, The ABC’s of Modern Catechetics, and The Art of Teaching Christian Doctrine.

Fr. John received awards from both the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and the Religious Education Assoication (REA). He was also the recipient of the F. Sadlier Dinger Award.

By his own count, Fr. John circled the globe 16 times, evangelizing and educating countless Christians. He nicknamed himself the “catechetical sputnik.” Humbly and patiently, he called for catechists and other ministers to faithfully herald the Good News of Jesus in joy, humility, and hope, even through times of hardship and trial.

The Ministry of Fr. Johannes Hofinger will remain always a “generous gift” to the Lord and to us. His challenge to us to become prayerful, authentic witnesses to a “message of life and for life” remains with us forcefully to this day. The Johannes Hofinger Conference is named in honor of this man who was an inspiration to catechists everywhere
